Jana Winter is an American journalist widely known for being the first to report that James Holmes had sent a notebook to his University of Colorado psychiatrist, Lynn Fenton, with details about his premeditated plan to kill people before he supposedly did. Previously, she worked for Fox News since joining in 2008.
She grew up in New Jersey and attended Montclair High School. After graduating from high school, Jana enrolled at Emory University, where she earned an undergraduate degree in 2002 and a master’s in journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 2006.
Winter is a former national security reporter for The Intercept. She worked as an investigative reporter at FoxNews.com from 2008 to November 2014. She also reported big stories involving wrongdoing at federal agencies, the Secret Service, and the Department of Homeland Security. Jana has also written exclusive reports on cyber investigations and the use of federal informants.
One of her main reports is the Aurora shooting in 2012, which brought a lot of commotion at the time, as Jana reported the incident before it even happened. She was the first to report, on July 25, 2012, that shooter James Holmes had sent a notebook to his psychiatrist with details about his planned murders. This caused Holmes’ attorney to order law enforcement personnel into the case.
The defense sought to force Winter to name his confidential law enforcement sources. Winter refused and began a nearly two-year legal battle. However, the judge announced that he was postponing any decision on the matter as he was unsure whether the notebook would be admissible at trial. On May 27, 2014, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by Daniel Arshack, one of James Holmes’ lawyers, essentially blocking any attempt to force Jana to reveal her source in court.
