He was born Jeffrey Demarco Teague to Shawn and Carol Teague on June 10, 1988, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Teague played basketball at a very young age and hoped to make a career out of it. He attended Pike High School, where his talent became visible to everyone as he was listed as the number 9 point guard in the country by the popular college sports recruitment website, Rivals.com.
Teague then enrolled at Wake Forest University. In his first year, he averaged 13.9 points per game and was honored on the ACC All-Freshman Team. In his second year, he was an All-American Consensus and a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, John Wooden Award, and the Oscar Robertson Trophy, averaging 18.8 points, 3.5 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. Following these successes, Teague announced that he would be giving up his last two years of college to participate in the 2009 NBA Draft, where he was ranked 19th in the Atlanta Hawks’ NBA Draft.

As a rookie in the NBA, Jeff Teague averaged 3.2 points, 1.7 assists, and 0.9 rebounds. In his second year, he showed progress and increased his average to 5.2 points, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 rebounds. In his third year, Teague was one of the most improved players in the league when he joined the Hawks, averaging 12.6 points, 4.9 assists, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.6 steals.
Jeff Teague played with the Hawks for four more years before he was transferred to the Indiana Pacers. In one season with his home team, he started and played 82 games, which marked the peak of his career with an average of 15.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 7.8 assists. At the end of the season, Teague decided not to stay with the Pacers because he decided to sign a three-year contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Marquis Teague has not always played abroad. After playing college basketball for a year alongside Anthony Davis, with whom he won an NCAA championship for the University of Kentucky Wildcats, he was selected by the Chicago Bulls for the 29th overall selection in the 2012 NBA draft. He spent about two years in the Windy City before joining the Brooklyn Nets in January 2014. Since Teague could not make an impression in Brooklyn, he was transferred to the Philadelphia 76ers in October of the same year, who gave up on him three days later. His next stop was the NBA Development League with the Oklahoma City Blue. He spent about two years with this team before moving abroad, first to Isreal, then to Russia, before returning to the Development League in 2017.
Upon his return, Marquis joined the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, then the Memphis Hustle, his brother’s G-League team. At the end of the 2017-18 season, he played 3 games for the Grizzlies before moving abroad again to Korea.
