Biography of Jeff Van Gundy
Jeffrey William Van Gundy is a well-known American commentator who works alongside Mike Breen and Mar Jackson on ESPN. He is also the current head coach of the USA National Team. Previously, he worked as head coach for the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Earlier, Van Gundy was born and raised in Hemet, California, United States.
He completed his high school education at Brockport High School. There he was a highly competitive player in school and remained a point guard. Despite his below-average height, he emerged as a strong player. Additionally, Jeff was twice named to the All-Greater Rochester Selection in 1979 and 1980. After that, he enrolled at Nazareth College where he earned All-American honors while playing for his college team called the Golden Flyers.
In addition, he also played the lead role for his team in the NCAA Division III Tournament berth. Shortly thereafter, he furthered his studies at Yale University, where he studied with the famous American actress Jodie Foster. Furthermore, he attended Menlo College and finally graduated in 1985 from Nazareth College. Right out of college, Van Gundy was hired as head coach at New York’s McQuaid Jesuit High School.
There, he worked for a year before moving and worked as an assistant coach, Rick Pitino, at Providence College. During his second season with the Friars, he was promoted to assistant coach under Gordon Chiesa. In 1989, Jeff was hired as an assistant coach for the New York Knicks. While there, he worked for six and a half years under the leadership of various coaches such as Don Nelson, Stu Jackson, John MacLeod and Pat Riley.
His team also won three Atlantic Division titles and even qualified for the playoffs every year. Van Gundy was also named head coach of the New York Knicks, taking over the reins from Don Nelson. As head coach of the New York Knick, he made headlines when he led his team to a 32-point victory over Michael Jordan. Additionally, the Knicks made franchise history by ranking third with 57-25 points. Jeff also created a memorable scene in the 1998 NBA playoff series between the New York Knicks and Miami Heat.
After that, the team continued to perform well until they received the shocking news that Jeff had resigned from the team. In 2003, he joined the Houston Rockets as a head coach. While there, Jeff also led his team to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in five years. At the end of the season, the team had reached 45-37 points, although they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
Despite this, he helps his team to secure qualification for the second round. After that, he led the team to wins in over 50 games before leaving and joining ESPN as a commentator and analyst. Furthermore, Jeff also became the head coach of the senior USA Basketball team in 2017. In the same year, he led his team to the gold medal at the FIBA AmeriCup. He is currently a regular play-by-play member alongside Mike Breen and Mar Jackson. Furthermore, he was a member of the executive board of the Pro-Vision Academy.
