Born in Surrey, England, she trained briefly at Redroofs Theater School and the National Youth Theatre. She was the first actress of East Asian descent to play a lead role in a British television series after appearing in the 2009 BBC show Spirit Warriors. Her role as Bo forced her to train in Wushu with martial arts choreographer Jude Poyer.
