Biography of Jim Donovan

Jim Donovan is a fifteen Emmy Award-winning American journalist who currently hosts CBS 3 Eyewitness News This Morning, the station’s popular morning news (weekdays, 4:30-7 a.m.) and CBS 3 Eyewitness News at noon. Donovan joined CBS 3 in 2004 as a “On Your Side” consumer reporter.

In April 2016, he approached the anchor’s desk to relaunch the network’s morning news, after standing out with his remarkable coverage of Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia in 2015. His on-air roles still include The Consumer Beat, where he and his team continues to resolve thousands of consumer-related objections from spectators in the Delaware Valley. His work has received awards from numerous organizations, from the Better Business Bureau to the Associated Press.

Donovan began his career as an intern in the news department at WWOR-TV in Secaucus, New Jersey. For a period of 6 years he worked in various roles at WWOR, including that of Emmy-nominated news writer and field producer. He did this while also working in the aviation industry.

While in college in the mid-1980s, Donovan was hired by Airlines Express People. He continued working for People Express and later with Continental Airlines, after an airline merger, as a domestic and international flight attendant. When he wasn’t serving in the WWOR newsroom, he could probably be found on a plane traveling to various destinations from London to Tahiti.

In 1993, Donovan decided to clip his airline wings and focus on his broadcasting career full-time. He served as research coordinator at WNBC-TV, NBC’s flagship station in New York. While there, he put his aviation experience to good use and received his first Emmy for an investigative report on surviving a plane crash.

Additionally, in 1994, Donovan transitioned to network programming and joined NBC’s cable business network, CNBC. He worked as an investigative producer as well as a consumer reporter for “Steals & Deals”, an evening consumer news program. While at CNBC, he developed his passion for consumer advocacy, and his work there earned him a National Cable Ace nomination and allowed him to contribute reporting to NBC’s Today Show.

Furthermore, in 1997, Donovan left the Big Apple to start a research unit at WGHP-TV, a highly rated Fox television station based in High Point, North Carolina. While working in North Carolina, the Better Business Bureau selected him as an “Outstanding Consumer Reporter”.

One of his most popular reports on WGHP included a weekly part where he helped bring people together with unclaimed funds. Over the course of a year, he helped return $1.4 million to viewers who received money from the North Carolina Unclaimed Property show.

Furthermore, in 2000, Donovan was recruited by WBNS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Columbus, Ohio. At WBNS, he worked as the network’s lead reporter. He received an Emmy Award and five more Emmy nominations for his investigations and consumer reporting. His defense on behalf of his viewers was honored by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

In addition, their expertise in consumer issues is now being used in KYW-TV, where he created the “3-On Your Side” consumer unit. Every year, he and his team help resolve thousands of consumer-related viewer complaints in the Delaware Valley.

Furthermore, his work at KYW earned him 13 Emmy Awards and 20 more Emmy nominations. After the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, Donovan started a fundraising phone bank. CBS 3 viewers donated over $1 million over 2 days to help the Red Cross relief effort.

Donovan was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. he attended Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, where he received a bachelor’s degree in communications. He is also involved in the community and gives his time to various local charities, including CARI, MANAand the Mazzoni Center. Likewise, he was sworn in at the Philadelphia Pioneers Hall of Fame broadcast in 2015 in honor of their body of work and community service.

During his free time, Donovan still enjoys traveling the world. His passport includes stamps from 44 countries in South America, Europe, Asia, America and the South Pacific. When not traveling, he lives in Gloucester County, New Jersey.
