Joe Johns is an American journalist and attorney who is currently the Senior Correspondent for CNN Washington, based in the Washington, DC office. Johns was promoted to this position in 2014. He comes to CNN from NBC News, where he worked as a Capitol Hill correspondent for TODAY and other NBC shows. He also worked for WRC-TV/NBC4 in Washington.
Born in the United States, he attended West High School, where he was a record-throwing star. He then attended and graduated from Marshall University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He also received a law degree from American University.
After graduating, he began his career at WSAZ-TV in Huntington in 1980. He then moved to WSOC-TV in Charlotte, where he was a reporter. Joe first arrived in Washington in 1983, when he joined WRC-TV, an affiliate of NBC, where his reporting won him an Emmy. He was among the NBC Nightly News team to receive an Edward R. Murrow Award for his “Beltway Sniper” reporting.
Prior to joining CNN, he covered events on Capitol Hill, the White House, and the Pentagon for over 10 years with NBC. He is currently CNN’s senior correspondent in Washington. He is responsible for covering a wide range of political and breaking news for the network.
