John Avlon biography
John Avlon is an American journalist, political commentator, editor-in-chief and surrogate anchor who currently appears on the New Day every morning. He also works as a Senior Political Analyst and anchor for CNN.
Previously, Avlon served as editor-in-chief and managing director of The Daily Beast, as well as a columnist and associate editor for The New York Sun. He also worked as the chief speechwriter for former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
John began his career as a speechwriter for Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. He prepared the Mayor’s State of the City Address, addressed it to the United Nations General Assembly on Counter-Terrorism, and testified at the Homeland Security Congress. After the launch of The Daily Beast in 2018, John joined the organization as a columnist. He worked his way to becoming a political editor and executive editor, and eventually became the managing director.
He first appeared on television in 2005 on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart to discuss his book, Independent Country. In June 2018, he switched to working as a full-time CNN Senior Political Analyst on the New Day, making regular television appearances. Furthermore, from there Avlon became a notable personality being interviewed in many documentaries including HBO’s Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Musicians, Gerrymandering in 2010 and the upcoming Washington History Channel miniseries.

As an author, John has published numerous articles and essays. For example, he co-edited the anthology Deadline Artists: The Greatest Newspaper Columns of America. In April 2018, it was revealed that Avlon was working on a book based on the last five weeks of Abraham Lincoln, which was due for release in fall 2020.

In addition, John is a member of Reshape New York, a party advocating reform to prevent racial manipulation through redistricting. The National Society of Newspaper Columnists awarded him for his online article in The Daily Beast that same year. Fortunately, he was designated ‘One of the Most Influential in News Media’ in 2017.
Avlon studied at Milton Academy which is an independent and co-educational prep school in Milton, Massachusetts, USA. Furthermore, he is a childhood friend and schoolmate of Matthew Pottinger. He later joined yale university where he studied and obtained his bachelor’s degree. In addition, Avlon received his MBA from Columbia University.
