Biography of John Del Giorno
John Del Giorno is an American Emmy Award-winning aerial reporter for Metro Networks and WABC-TV in New York City. Giorno has been featured on Eyewitness News since 1995, having flown over New York longer than any other helicopter reporter on television.
John attended Union Catholic Regional High School from 1984 to 1988. He later joined Ithaca College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Radio and Television.
When Metro Traffic partnered with WABC-TV and Eyewitness News to launch News Copter 7, Giorno was chosen to lead the effort. Since then he has been on board as an aerial reporter, studio announcer and producer for Metro.
In his career, John specializes in live coverage of breaking news. Working as an aerial reporter and cameraman, John was at the scene of numerous news events in the region, including the 1995 Long Island wildfires, TWA Flight 800, Egypt Air 990, the search for JFK Jr., the floods of Tropical Storm Floyd and the 2003 blackout.
On September 11, 2001, News Copter 7 was on the air as the tragic events at the World Trade Center unfolded. Giorno’s coverage began as the second plane passed his helicopter over New York Harbor and ended more than five hours later, his reports and images are seen around the world.

Portions of John’s work are featured in the 9/11 gallery at the Newseum in Washington DC. In addition, his memories of 9/11 have been included with the country’s top journalists in two books, Running Toward Danger (Rowan and Littlefield, 2002) and Covering Catastrophe (Bonus Books, 2002).
In 2008, John was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Talent on Camera: Live Reporter. He is the first helicopter reporter to be recognized in this category. Additionally, John serves on the Board of Directors of the National ENG Helicopter Association, a group dedicated to safety awareness in the nationwide news helicopter industry.
When not flying, John can sometimes be found cruising at major sporting events across the country, serving as an airship camera operator. He is also a co-owner of AeroVideo LLC.
