John Layfield is an American retired professional wrestler, NFL player, TV personality, and journalist from Texas. He is currently recognized for working as a commentator for FOX News. John even plays the role of a financial analyst for FOX Business Network. He even spent time working as a Senior Vice President at Northeast Securities for nearly a decade. Layfield has also appeared as a news commentator for WWE since his retirement.
Layfield was born and raised in a middle-class family in the small community of Sweetwater, Texas. He grew up as a sports fanatic and gamer from a very young age. John played soccer and football in high school before finally joining college. He then joined Abilene Christina University where he played college football until graduation.
Layfield played offensive line his first two years as an NFL football player. Eventually, he signed with the Los Angeles Raiders as an undrafted free agent in his junior and senior years in college. He also played in the World League of American Football, starting every game in the early 1991 season at right tackle.
From there, John developed an immense love for wrestling in early 1992. He began training under Black Bart and Brad Rhenigans, who helped Layfield make his first debut that September in the Texas-based Global Wrestling Federation. John then performed his first stunt under the stage name John Hawk. Eventually he made friends and formed a tag team for himself called the Texas Mustangs. In 1995, Layfield made his first wrestling debut for the World Wrestling Federation as John Hawk in a dark match with Savio Vega.
In 1996, John appeared to make his TV debut on an episode of WWF Superstars under his new stage name. Justin Hawk Brashaw. John played several WWE matches that catapulted his fame as a wrestler during the WWE Attitude Era. His most iconic moment before retiring in 2009 was when he won the WWE Championship and held it for 280 days.
