John William Oliver was born on April 23, 1977, in Erdington Birmingham England. His parents were Carole a music teacher from Liverpool and Jim Oliver who was a school headmaster and social worker from the Wirral Peninsula. His uncle was the composer Stephen Oliver.

Oliver went to Mark Rutherford School in Bedford where he learned to play the viola as a child. After finishing secondary school he attended Christ’s College Cambridge. During his time there in the mid-to-late 1990s, he was actively involved in the Cambridge Footlights a renowned university theatrical club.
