Judge Karen is an American television personality, former court judge and criminal defense attorney in Florida before turning to TV to preside over her own court shows. She is currently the judge for the syndicated TV shows Judge Karen and Judge Karen’s Court.
Talking about her education, she completed her graduation from the prestigious Bowdoin College in Maine on a full scholarship. She then spent summers studying at the University of Wisconsin, then worked in the public welfare section in areas such as job training. Furthermore, she graduated from the Levin School of Law at the University of Florida in 1987.
After graduating, she practiced law in Florida for 13 years in both the State and the Public Defender’s Office. In 1998, she became a Traffic Magistrate hearing non-criminal traffic cases. Later, in 2000, she ran for judgeship and won by overthrowing a former incumbent and becoming the second black woman to serve in court in Miami-Dade County.
In April 2008, she resigned to bring her passion for the law and her desire to help others in homes across America as the host of her new series, ‘Judge Karen’. When she is off duty, she supports many child advocacy programs, including the Whispers Program for Girls, the GEMS Program for Girls, and the 5000 Role Models Program, among others.
