Judge Marilyn Milian is an American television personality, speaker, and retired Florida Circuit Court judge, currently best known for presiding over the American television series The People’s Court. She is the first Hispanic mediator to preside over a court show.
She became the presiding judge of the People’s Court during the fourth season of the current issue in 2001, replacing Jerry Sheindlin. Milian surpassed Joseph Wapner, the original presiding referee, during the 2012-2013 season as the longest-serving judge in the series’ entire history.
At age eight, her family moved to Miami, where she attended school, graduating from St. Brendan High School. She then joined the University of Miami where she received her undergraduate degree in Psychology. Marilyn further entered the Georgetown University Law Center, earning her JD. She spent a year working at Harvard Law School as the Guatemala Project’s director of training. In this role, she was responsible for training Guatemala’s trial, defense and prosecution judiciary in investigation and trial techniques.

Milan was appointed assistant state attorney to the Dade County Attorney’s Office by Janet Reno, then county state attorney. After ten years of service, Milian worked for the Miami County Courthouse, serving in the domestic, criminal and civil violence divisions. In 1999, she was appointed to the Miami Circuit Court by Florida Governor Jeb Bush, serving in the criminal division.
In 2001, Milian replaced Jerry Sheindlin as judge of the People’s Court and became the first Hispanic judge on any English-language television show. Additionally, she is listed as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Miami School of Law, teaching litigation skills.

Marilyn serves as a judge in the second life of the courtroom show The People’s Court, the first arbitration-based reality court show and the second longest running courtroom show in history. She has chaired the show since the year 2001, starting with the 17th season of the People’s Court.

At the end of the show’s 28th season, Marilyn completed twelve and a half seasons presiding over the show, officially making her the show’s longest-serving judge. In a 2017 Saturday Night Live parody of the People’s Court, Marilyn was portrayed by Cecily Strong, who presided over a case between President Donald Trump and three judges of the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2019, Milian appeared in the daytime version of Slumdog Millionaire, earning $5,000 for Camp Fiesta, a free Florida summer camp for children with cancer.
