Kris Van Cleave is an Emmy Award-winning American journalist currently working as a Senior Transportation Correspondent for CBS News based in Phoenix, Arizona. He is also the current national correspondent for all broadcasts on CBS and its platforms. Prior to CBS News, Van Cleave spent about eight years working as an anchor and reporter for WJLA NewsChannel 8, based in Washington DC. Kris even worked for Colorado Springs-based XETV/FOX 6 News and KOAA News before joining WJLA News.
Van Cleave is a California native who grew up with a passion for journalism at a very young age. He finished elementary school and high school in his hometown. Van then attended the University of Southern California, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA in Journalism and Communications.
Cleave began his career immediately after his college graduation, joining KTLA TV News as a producer. His duty at this point was to ensure that the nationally syndicated Cyber Guy Report aired on time. Van Cleave left KTLA after two years and joined KOAA TV in Colorado Springs. He spent about 3 years working as a producer and field reporter in Colorado. He left KOAA News and joined California-based FOX 6 XETV News as a reporter and anchor.
Van gained more recognition after he became an on-air reporter for Washington-based WJLA News Channel 8. During his WJLA tenure, Van Cleave reported live from the White House on the night Osama Bin Laden was assassinated, he reported live from South Carolina’s GOP Presidential Primary and the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti. During his free time, Van Cleave enjoys hiking and spending quality time with friends and family.
