Kumail Ali Nanjiani is a Pakistani-American comedian and actor. He is recognized for his role as Dinesh on the HBO comedy series Silicon Valley, as well as the film The Big Sick. As a writer, he and his wife received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Furthermore, Ali is also known for his appearance in other movies such as Franklin & Bash, Newsreaders, Portlandia, and Eternals.
He was born and raised in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. He graduated from St. Michael’s Convent School for his O-Levels and later enrolled at Karachi Grammar School where he finished with an A-Level. Thereafter, he moved to the United States to continue his education at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. There he graduated with a double major in computer science and philosophy in 2001. After that, Kumain moved to Chicago and performed his first stand-up comedy at open mic events.
Nanjiani began her professional career in 2007 when she wrote and starred in an original autobiographical show in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. In 2022, Nanjiani starred in the lead role of Somen Banerjee in the Hulu miniseries Welcome to Chippendales movie.
