Laura Marling Bio

Laura Marling was born on 1 February 1990 to Laura Beatrice Marling. She is the youngest of three daughters born to a music teacher and her husband Sir Charles William Somerset Marling.

Career

Marling started music at a very early age when her father, an amateur singer, and songwriter, ran a small recording studio, introduced her to folk music, shaped her musical taste, and taught her to play the guitar at the age of three. This experience was both a blessing and a curse for her, as she felt that she could not fit into any other genre.

At the age of 13, Marling started to write her songs. Her first song was inspired by the Libertines. In an interview with the NY Times, she revealed that her first record was Macy Gray and that her father had insisted that she listen to good music and played her many songs by Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.

Besides guitar, Marling learned to play bass, piano, and dulcimer.

After secondary school, Marling went to her older sisters in London with her parents’ permission, where she finally started her music career.

First, she joined a country band under the direction of Winston Marshall. At that time Marshall was running a nightclub in London, and Marling became part of that club. Soon after, she joined the original line-up of indie-folk band Noah and the Whale as a background vocalist on their debut album Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down, but left the group before the album was released in 2008 due to a broken relationship with the band’s lead singer, Charlie Fink.

In 2007, Marling appeared in the piece Suspicious Eyes by The Rakes before going solo. She worked with Mystery Jets as a guest vocalist on their 2008 single Young Love and also collaborated with Johnny Flynn.

Her debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim was released in February 2008 and was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Award. The album, like other subsequent singles, was released on Virgin Records. The follow-up album to Alas, I Cannot Swim, entitled I Speak Because I Can, was released on March 22, 2010, this time produced by Ethan Johns.

After attending her second gig, Jamie T invited her to go on tour with him. She also toured with some other musicians like Adam Green. Her fourth album Once I Was An Eagle was nominated for the Mercury Music Award in 2008, 2010, and 2013.

Marling moved to Los Angeles in spring 2013, where she set up a studio later in 2016. According to her, setting up a studio in London is “too expensive”.

While Marling gave up music in LA, learned yoga, and took up a job as a yoga teacher, but found no fulfillment in her new job, she followed her steps back to music and returned in 2017 with the album “Semper Femina” on a grand scale. The album earned her a Grammy nomination in the category Best Folk Album.

She has also won the Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist and is also a winner of the NME Awards.
