Leah Hope is a renowned award-winning American reporter who currently works for ABC 7 News, Chicago’s number one station for news. It focuses on special investigations and other important stories that influence the lives of Chicagoans. She joined the ABC 7 team in 1997.
Prior to joining ABC 7, Hope worked at KATU-TV, an ABC affiliate in Portland, Oregon. She anchored weekend nightly news and reported on weekdays. Furthermore, before joining KATU-TV, Hope worked at WISH-TV in Indianapolis, Indiana as an anchor and reporter. She began her professional broadcasting career as a general reporter at WBC-TV in Salisbury, Maryland.
Leah’s coverage of stories from the African American community was honored at the national and local levels. In 2003, she won two awards from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) for her reporting on a group of “Lost Boys” attacked by a Chicago gang and changes in the cosmetics industry that reflect the changing face of America. The NABJ Chicago Chapter awarded Leah the 2003 Russ Ewing Award for Excellence in Journalism and also recognized her with the 2004 Award for Excellence in Business Journalism for a series of reports on affirmative action.

She contributed to “People, Places, and Things You Should Know: Women in Science and Technology,” which won the 2001 Gracie Award from American Women in Radio and Television. Leah has won several Peter Lisagor Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for her stories, from breaking news coverage to consumer and business reporting. Additionally, she was honored by the Chicago section of the Council on American Islamic Relations with the 2007 Media Award for ethical reporting. In addition, she was honored in 2013 with the Diogenes Award for Media Excellence from the Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois. Likewise, she won an Emmy for reporting during the 2012 NATO Summit.
In addition, Leah is a visiting faculty member at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida. She is also a member of the Columbia College Journalism Advisory Board and belongs to several journalistic organizations such as the Investigative Reporters and Editors Association, American Women in Radio and Television, National Association of Black Journalists, National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Also, when she is not working, her community involvement includes working in the arts. She is an active member of the Leadership Advisory Board of the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art and Instituto Cervantes of Chicago. Her charity work took her to Minneapolis by bicycle to participate in the 2001 Chicago AIDS Ride. In addition, she participated in several breast cancer awareness campaigns to promote early detection.
