Lelan Statom is an American Emmy Award-winning meteorologist who currently serves as the Senior Weather Anchor for the Tennessee-based station NewsChannel 5. He is known for providing comprehensive weather updates and helping numerous Tennessee people start their day for the last fifteen years. Prior to NewsChannel 5, he spent over five years working as a weather reporter and meteorologist for WTVK News and a weekend reporter for WCYB.
Staton was born in Chicago but spent his entire life growing up in Dyersburg, Tennessee. He developed an interest in the weather when he was in seventh grade during a science project. Lelan used to work at his own meteorological center that he created with his father in his own backyard since he was in high school.
Lelan excelled in her higher studies and went to University. Eventually, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communication with a minor in public relations from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. He also worked hard and received his Broadcast Meteorology certificate from Mississippi State University.
Lelan began his career as a meteorologist at WTVK News (now called WVLT News) in Knoxville. From there, he joined the WATE weather team and provided relevant weather updates each morning. In addition, he also played other roles such as a producer, tape editor and weekend editor while still working at various stations in Knoxville.
He also worked with Black Entertainment television news while in Knoxville. He also appeared as a weather anchor for WXYB News before joining NewsChannel 5 in the late 1990s. Lelan’s work has earned him numerous honors and awards, such as a Mid-South Regional Emmy Award for his comprehensive coverage of tornadoes that hit America in April 2006.
