Biography of Lucy Kafanov

Lucy Kafanov is a Russian-American journalist who currently works as a CNN correspondent in Denver. Prior to joining CNN, Lucy worked at NBC News as a Foreign Correspondent. She is best known for being the first Russian-American journalist to have access to a newly formed Russian Arctic Military Brigade.

Kafanov joined CNN in 2019 after nearly a decade working abroad as a foreign correspondent around the world. In her career, she has worked in over 50 countries including Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Myanmar, Korean Peninsula, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, Venezuela and Yemen.

On CNN, Lucy has covered a wide range of stories ranging from the coronavirus pandemic; ongoing nationwide protests and civil unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd; the devastating impact of climate change and record-breaking wildfires in the West; for the 2020 US presidential election.

Furthermore, in 2016, Lucy joined NBC News as a foreign correspondent in London. She has reported for the TODAy Show, Nightly News and MSNBC. While working at the station, Lucy reported on terrorist incidents across Europe; she covered the battle against ISIS in Iraq; covered the Korean Peninsula and Korean nuclear crisis in 2017. She also became the first American journalist to gain access to Russia’s newly formed Arctic Military Brigade.

Her first assignment on NBC News took her aboard a US Navy P-3 Orion while searching for the missing EgyptAir flight MS804. A few months later, Lucy became one of the first reporters to be on the scene in Amatrice after the deadly earthquake nearly destroyed the Italian town in 2016.

Since then, Kafanov has reported on most major international news, from terrorist attacks in Paris and London and elsewhere in Europe, to Brexit, the crisis in Iraq and Syria.

Her reporting for TODAY took her from the Great Pyramid of Giza to a dinosaur fossil dig in North Dakota and the cool surfing adventure 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

Prior to joining NBC News, Kafanov worked as an independent multimedia reporter and foreign correspondent. She also worked in Instabul as a freelance journalist, reporting predominantly in the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Russia. Lucy frequently contributed words and photographs from Turkey, the Middle East and Europe to outlets such as the Christian Science Monitor, Newsweek, VICE News, Al Jazeera, Vocativ and USA Today.

In 2016, Lucy received an International Reporting Project grant for an investigative reporting project in Myanmar. In addition, her report on Pakistani civilian casualties of drone attacks in tribal areas was highly praised by the Association for International Broadcasting’s Global Media Excellence Awards.

Additionally, in 2015, Lucy received a grant from the IWMF’s Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists. In 2016, she was awarded a Scholarship in Religion by the International Reporting Project (IRP), supported by the Henry Luce Foundation.

Before moving abroad, Lucy worked in Washington political coverage as a print reporter on Capitol Hill. She later worked as a television producer for PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Kafanov is a proud graduate of Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from George Washington University.
