Lydia Esparra is an American journalist who is currently working at WKYC 3News after returning to the station on August 31, 2021. Before leaving the station and returning, she worked as a weekend news anchor and general assignment reporter from 2000 to 2008. She was inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2004 and 2007, Lydia won an Emmy for Outstanding Weekend Newscast.
Born and raised in Youngstown, she attended Ohio State University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications. She became the first Latina news reporter at a Cleveland television station. Additionally, she received the Robert G. McGruder Diversity in Media Distinguished Leadership Award from Kent State University.
However, before returning to Ohio in 1997, she was the community affairs manager at WCIX-TV. Lydia then moved to Georgia, working at WFXL-TV in Albany as a reporter and anchor. She then became the bureau chief at WTVM-TV in Columbus, Georgia. Additionally, she conducted several interviews with former President Jimmy Carter. She also received the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Media Award for her coverage of the Georgia State Prison reforms.
