Mackenyu Arata is a Japanese actor who became famous after playing Wataya Arata in the live-action Chihayafuru trilogy in 2016. This role won him the 40th Japanese Academy Award of the Year in 2017. He is also famous for playing Enishi Yukishiro in Rurouni Kenshin. Saishusho: The Final.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Mackenyu attended Beverly Hill High School in your Advanced Placement Program. He went on to appear in a few movies and TV shows while growing up, including the TV miniseries Team Astro and the Japanese film Oyaji. Just like any other normal child, Arata had many interests. He was eager to learn as much as possible.
At the age of seven, he learned to ride a horse and Yabusame. He also practiced Kyokushin Karate since he was 8 years old and placed third in the US Kyokushin Karate Nationals in high school. Talking about his passion for acting, he was inspired to act at the age of 15, when he watched a Japanese movie and the actor who starred in it inspired him. He kept the dream of co-starring alongside the actor once in his career.
He actually made it and later co-starred opposite the actor (deceased Haruma Miura) in the film adaptation of Gunjo Senki. At age 16, in 2014, he landed his first leading role in a feature film in Take a Chance. In the same year, Mackenyu decided to act in Japan, stating that Japan would be the best place for him due to the variety of roles available to young and future actors.
After his career took firm roots, he appeared in many movies like Kiss That Kills, Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), Rurouni Kenshin and many other movies. In 2021, he starred as the lead in the manga adaptation of Brave: Gunjou Senki. In November of the same year, he was cast as Roronoa Zoro in One Piece. He was also cast as Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist in March 2022.
