Biography of María Elena Salinas
Maria Elena Salinas is a Spanish-language news anchor and journalist who previously co-anchored Univision’s evening newscast, Noticiero Univision, and the network’s newsmagazine, Aquí y Ahora. She is notably the most recognized Hispanic journalist in the United States.
She moderated the eighth Democratic presidential primary debate on March 9, 2016, in Miami, Florida, along with Karen Tumulty and Jorge Ramos. The debate was sponsored by Univision and The Washington Post.
Elena began her career in journalism in 1981 as a reporter for Spanish-language television station KMEX-34 in Los Angeles. Her comprehensive coverage of the Hispanic community in Southern California led her to become a co-anchor of Noticiero Univision.
Salinas has worked for more than three decades in the United States and 18 Latin American countries. She has interviewed Latin American heads of state, rebel leaders, dictators and every U.S. president since Jimmy Carter.

In 2017, Elena began an English-language crime show, The Real Story with Maria Elena Salinas, on Investigation Discovery. For ten years (2001–2011), Maria wrote a weekly syndicated column in English and Spanish.
On July 22, 2019, CBS News announced that Maria Elena would be joining the station as a contributor. She joined “CBS This Morning” to unpack the diverse Latino communities in the U.S. that have long been held together as a single voting bloc, but economic, geographic and cultural differences show stark divisions in how Latino Americans voted in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
