
Biography of Mark Rober
Mark B. Rober is an American YouTuber, Engineer, Inventor, and Educator. He is famous for his YouTube videos on popular science and DIY gadgets. Previously, Rober worked as an engineer at NASA for nine years, where he spent seven years working on the Curiosity rover at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Rober was born in Orange and raised in a Mormon family in Orange County, California. He became interested in engineering at a very young age, making a pair of glasses that helped prevent tears when chopping onions. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in mechanical engineering. Mark also holds a master’s degree from the University of Southern California.
Rober started earning in 2014 when he was hired by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). During his time there, he designed and delivered hardware on several JPL missions, including AMT, GRAIL, SMAP, and the Mars Science Laboratory. Mark was also one of the main architects of “JPL Wired”. He worked there for nine years before moving to work for Apple Inc. There, he worked as a product designer in their Special Projects Group, where he created patents involving virtual reality in self-driving cars.
Mark started his YouTube journey in 2011. His first video was titled “iPad2 Halloween Costume- Gaping Hole in Torso”. The video went viral within a day and received millions of views. This led to Mark creating Digital Dudz, a costume company that made Halloween costumes inspired by Mark’s video. In 2013, he sold Digital Dudz to another costume company called Morphsuits. Furthermore, he has many inventions to his name. In a video released in 2018, he showed off a unique glitter bomb that gave off an unpleasant odor when it exploded. The bomb was first seen in action against parcel thieves.
Mark went on to create improved versions of the glitter bomb. His creation was also used against money mules working for online scammers. Mark Rober collaborated with YouTube star Jim Browning to take down fraudulent call centers. Additionally, he and fellow YouTuber MrBeast started the #TeamTrees campaign to raise enough money to plant 20 million trees by 2020. A goal that was later completed in 2019. Two years later, Mark and MrBeast ran another campaign called #TeamSeas which helped remove more than 30 million pounds of trash from the ocean in one year.
In addition, he has contributed articles to Men’s Health and gave a TEDx presentation in 2015, How to Come Up with Good Ideas. He has also made several appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! . He released an accompanying video of an updated obstacle course a year later. The original video had 96.2 million views as of August 2022, with the second video gaining 61.4 million views around the same time.
Additionally, Rober has received quite a few awards which include a one-time award as STEM Person of the Year. In addition, an honorary fellowship from the Institution of Engineering and Technology in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the engineering profession
