Biography of Martha Karua
Martha Karua is a Kenyan politician who is currently an advocate for social justice. She is a former long-time member of parliament for the Gichugu constituency and a lawyer for the High Court of Kenya. Furthermore, she was Minister of Justice. However, she resigned from this position in April 2009.
Karua is famous for consistently fighting for the protection of women’s rights and improving the democratic process. Born in Kirinyaga district, Karua attended Mugumo Elementary School, Kabare Girls Boarding Schooland São Miguel Keruguya boarding school.
She later participated Kiburia Girls Secondary School and Karoti Girls Secondary School where she obtained her East African School Certificate from Karoti Girls High School. For her A levels, she participated girls from nairobi High school. Karua then studied law at University of Nairobi from 1977 to 1980. In addition, she enrolled in Kenya Law School for the statutory postgraduate course in law.
2013 to present
Martha Karua contested the 2013 Kenyan presidential election, under the NARC Kenya party ticket. The new Kenyan law prevented presidential candidates from simultaneously seeking a parliamentary seat, so she had to give up her interest in her somewhat secure seat in Gichuga. Karua ranked sixth with 43,881 votes in a contested election result.
However, she would return to Kenya’s political scene in the 2017 general election seeking a government seat in Kirinyaga County. She lost to Governor Anne Waiguru. Karua contested the election alleging electoral irregularities and filed a petition with the High Court of Appeal and ultimately the Supreme Court. She went on to file a petition at the East African Court of Justice. As a result, she sued the government of Kenya over the failure of its Judicial arm to dispense justice in the petition.
In December 2015, she admitted to having received a “donation” of two million Ksh towards the costs of her British American Tobacco presidential campaign. She said that he thought the contribution from Paul Hopkins, a BAT employee, was a personal donation. Most notably, the money was paid through Mary M’Mukindia, who ran the Karua campaign.
On September 20, 2021, Senior Councilor Martha Karua was unanimously elected as the interim spokesperson for the Mount Kenya Unity Forum by a section of Central Kenya leaders.
