Marvin Lewis is the head coach of the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals, he has been the head of the team since 2003. Before taking on the job as head coach of the Bengals, he was the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens from 1996 to 2001. During this time he helped the team win the Super Bowl XXXV.

Biography (Ethnicity)

Lewis was born on September 23, 1958, in McDonald, Pennsylvania, the son of the African-American couple Vanetta and Marvin Lewis Sr. His late father worked in a steel mill, and his mother is a registered nurse who later became a nurse.

Marvin is one of his parents, three children, and he has two sisters. His father, Marvin Lewis Sr., died in 2014 at the age of seventy-eight. Lewis loved the game of soccer from an early age and was given the opportunity to express his love of the game during his years at Fort Cherry High School, where he played with the school soccer team as a safety and later as a quarterback.

He was also on the wrestling team and played baseball in the summer. After high school, he decided to continue playing soccer at Purdue University before receiving a scholarship to Idaho State University where he played college soccer.

Lewis played in the linebacker position and won the All-Big Sky Conference honors three years in a row. He earned both his first degree and master’s degree in Idaho. In 2001, he was inducted into Idaho State University’s Sports Hall of Fame and in 2012 he was named Idaho State Alumni of the Year.

Coaching Career

It was during his master’s degree at Idaho State University that Lewis decided to try coaching after the school’s soccer team made him an offer. So he began his coaching career at Idaho State School as a graduate assistant coach, before spending four years (1981-1984) coaching the team’s linebackers.

During his time with the team, he won the NCAA Division I-AA Championship. Lewis later served as an assistant coach at Long Beach State University from 1985-1986; in the same capacity, he served at the University of New Mexico from 1987-1989 and at the University of Pittsburgh from 1990-1992.

He began his NFL coaching career in 1992 as an intern with both the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. That was before he was hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers to coach the Linebackers. He was on the staff team of the Steelers who lost the Super Bowl XXX.

In 1996 the Cleveland Browns (now Baltimore Ravens) hired Marvis as their defensive coordinator and he stayed with the team (1996-2001). He later served in the same capacity with the Washington Redskins before serving as assistant head coach.

Marvin Lewis received his first head coach position in 2003 when the Cincinnati Bengals hired him to replace Dick LeBeau, and he has remained in the franchise to this day (fifteen seasons). In 2003 and 2004, he led the team back to 8th and 8th place with 8-8 placements.

In 2005, the Bengals won their first season and won their first AFC North Division title in 15 years. He has led the team to 5 consecutive playoff appearances between 2011 and 2015.

Lewis was the first Cincinnati Bengal coach to be named Coach of the Year by the Associated Press after Paul Brown. He also holds the record as head coach of the Bengals with the highest number of victories.

Marcus follows in his father’s footsteps – after playing linebacker in college football in Indiana State between 2008-2011, he spent 2013 as an assistant on the coaching staff at the University of Cincinnati before joining his father in Bengal as a coaching staff. He is currently the coach for the defensive quality control of the team.
