Bio of Maynard James Keenan
Maynard James Keenan is also referred to as James Herbert Keenan. James Herbert Keenan is an American musician, songwriter, rock singer, music producer, and winemaker who sang in the band Tool and now sings in A Perfect Circle. He was born on 17 April 1964 in Ravenna, Ohio, the only child of Judith Marie and Michael Loren Keenan, Baptist Christians.

However, his parents divorced in 1968 and he had to stay with his mother. At that time he rarely saw his father, a high school teacher who had to move to Michigan after the divorce. With this arrangement, Maynard James Keenan could see his father only once a year, and this lasted for the next 12 years of his young life.
In the meantime, his mother Judith Marie remarried, which meant that her son had a stepfather who was intolerant and showed apathy towards him. At a time when his mother’s health was deteriorating due to a debilitating brain aneurysm, he asked her to return to his father in Michigan, and it turned out that this was a decision that made Maynard what we know him for today.
Considering his educational background, Maynard James Keenan attended the Kendall College of Arts and Design in Grand Rapids before serving in the Marine Corps in the early 1980s, he attended the local high school in his hometown of Michigan.
In the military, James Keenan served as a forward observer and was known for being mentally different from his comrades. For this reason, he was given the opportunity to study at West Point Prep School, the preparatory school of the United States Military Academy, from 1983 to 1984. After completing his military service, Maynard James Keenan returned to Michigan to attend art school before moving to Los Angeles in 1988 where he became an interior designer for pet stores. Later he began working in set construction, playing bass guitar, and singing for independent bands and the Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty.
He met Adam Jones and they both formed the band Tool. Before Tool, he was a solo artist and had hits like 1st Pig and The Three Little Pigs. The Tool band had the culture of releasing an album exactly every 5 years. Their albums Undertow, Aenima, and Systema Encéphale were released every 5 years in a row. However, Maynard James Keenan later left Tool and formed another band called A Perfect Circle, which released three albums: Mer De Noms, The Thirteenth Step, and eMOTIVe.
Apart from music, the talented singer is also an entrepreneur. He owns a vineyard where he produces fine wines, the Merkin Vineyards, and Caduceus Cellars. His interest in wine can be traced back to his grandparents who made wine where they lived in northern Italy. When his mother died in 2003 from complications of an aneurysm, Maynard scattered her ashes over one of his vineyards and later renamed one of his wines after her – Cabernet Sauvignon “Nagual del Judith”.
