Melanie Perkins is a famous Australian billionaire technology entrepreneur. Perkin is the CEO and co-founder of Canva. In 2021, she was considered one of the richest women in Australia. Melanie is also one of the youngest CEOs of a tech startup valued at over $1 billion.
Perkin was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia. She completed her high school from a local school in her hometown. During the holiday period, she used to sell her handmade scarves in shops and markets in Perth. After graduating from high school, Melanie enrolled at Western Australia University, majoring in communication, psychology and commerce. However, at the age of 19, she dropped out to pursue her career along with her partner Cliff Obrecht.
In 2007, Perkin and Cliff founded the company Fusion Books. The company allowed the student to create their own school yearbooks using a simple drag and drop tool equipped with a design library. Things didn’t go well because the company faced a lot of competition from big companies and also a lack of resources. However, her parents were supportive, and after five years, Fusion Books became Australia’s largest yearbook company and expanded into France and New Zealand.
After the success of Fusion Books, Perkin and Obrecht started their second company called Canva. In 2011, they met a prominent investor, Bill Tai, who helped them find investors for their new project. They also met Lars Rasmussen, co-founder of Google Maps. Lars helped them out and became the company’s technical advisor, where he introduced Perkins and Obrecht to Cameron Adams, a former Google employee with relevant technical knowledge.
Adam later agreed to invest in the company and become its third founder and chief product officer. Furthermore, Melanie was featured as one of the “Top Under 30 of the Decade” in the world. She also appeared on The Australian Financial Review’s 2020 rich list with a net worth of A$3.43 billion.
