Murray Bartlett Biography

Murray Bartlett is an Australian actor. He is prominent for his roles in series such as Looking (2014–2015),  Tales of the City (2019),  The White Lotus (2021), Physical (2022), and The Last of Us (2023). For his role in The White Lotus, he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited.

Murray was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He attended John Curtin College of the Arts in Fremantle, where he graduated from the drama program in 1988. Soon after that, he enrolled at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. There he graduated with a degree in Performing Arts in 1991. Bartlett has been in an acting career for several years. He was seen in Neighbours playing con man Luke Foster in 1993.

After that, he moved to the United States in 2000 and a few years later, he was given his first significant break. There he was chosen to appear as a guest star in the HBO series Sex and the City. He also played D.K., John Crichton’s best friend, in four episodes of the SciFi Channel series Farscape. Bartlett toured alongside Hugh Jackman in the 2006 production of Jackman’s Broadway smash The Boy From Oz by the Australian touring company. From 2007 until the end of the show in 2009, Murray was a member of the cast on the CBS daytime soap opera Guiding Light, where he played Cyrus Foley.

From 2014 to 2015, Bartlett was featured in the HBO comedy-drama series Looking where he portrayed the role of Dominic Basaluzzo. In addition, he also played a recurring character in the musical drama Nashville in 2017. Besides that, he assumed the central role of Michael ‘Mouse’ Tolliver in the Netflix revival of Tales of the City. Additionally, Murray played Armond, the opulent resort manager and a recovering heroin addict who had been “clean” for five years, in the 2021 film The White Lotus. Through a self-tape audition, Bartlett was given the part.

For his role, he received nominations at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Independent Spirit Awards. Prior, he won the AACTA Awards, Critics’ Choice Television Awards, and Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2023, Bartlett appeared in the HBO post-apocalyptic drama series The Last of Us, portraying Frank in the episode “Long, Long Time”. At the time of its airing, the episode received universal acclaim and was widely considered to be the best of the show’s first season.
