Mazepin had a significant amount of experience driving F1 cars before earning a full-time place on the grid. Force India hired him as a development driver in 2016. In this role, which he held for three seasons, he participated in several team test sessions as well as a significant amount of simulator work.

Furthermore, he has driven a Mercedes several times. He completed 12 days of private testing on the W08 in early 2019, and a few months later had the opportunity to drive that year’s Silver Arrow in season testing in Barcelona. He ended up leading the timesheets in the session he did, and his best time, 1:15.775, was just two tenths slower than that of Valtteri Bottas the day before.

The fact that he has previously worked with an F1 team and driven F1 cars was a factor in Haas’ decision to sign him as a full-time driver at the end of 2020, as was the significant funding he brings. His first F1 mission, however, was far from easy, as Haas had already decided not to develop the VF-21, instead focusing on the new 2022 regulations.

As a result, Mazepin was relegated to the back of the pack, but more worryingly, his pace in the early rounds was comfortably behind rookie teammate Mick Schumacher. Mazepin was unhappy with the older chassis he was using, believing it to be heavier and therefore slower, and claimed that it took Haas “five races” to believe him when he said there was a problem with his car.

….

After the summer break, a new one arrived, presumably paid for by Mazepin’s father Dmitry Mazepin instead of Haas, and Mazepin’s performance compared to Schumacher improved from there. Mazepin’s form suffered again after damaging his chassis during practice at the Qatar Grand Prix, with the Russian driver missing the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi after testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of race day.

Mazepin also had his share of altercations with Schumacher, which resulted primarily from Haas’ policy of alternating track positions between drivers during qualifying laps. At the Dutch GP, Schumacher was also tough on Mazepin, accusing him of trying to put himself and other drivers on the wall. Mazepin had already received a five-second penalty for colliding with Schumacher at Monza.

Mazepin’s best result of the season came at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he finished P21 in a 20-driver championship after Robert Kubica finished P14 and P15 in his two Alfa Romeo appearances. Despite this, Mazepin and Schumacher remained at Haas for the 2022 season.
