
Biography of Orville Peck
Daniel Pitout is a South African country musician based in Canada. He is also known by his professional name Orville Peck. Orville rose to fame after the release of his debut album Pony in 2019. Furthermore, he won the Tom of Finland Foundation Cultural Icon Award in 2022. Prior to that, Peck is also recognized for always wearing a fringed mask which he never took off in public.
Orville was born in Canada and raised in a musical family where his father worked as a sound engineer. As a child, he was able to perform in cartoons as a voice-over, as well as musical theater. In his early 20s, he moved to London to study acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and later starred in a West End play. He began to acknowledge his passion for country music after the release of his song “Dead of Night” in 2017. In January 2019, Sub Pop announced the release of Orville’s debut album by posting a David Lynch-inspired video for his single from “Dead of Night” premieres, with an equally surreal second video for “Turn to Hate” in February. The Pony album arrived in March 2019.
After Pony was released, it received rave reviews and was later nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the Juno Awards, as well as shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. The release of Pony not only made him famous, but also opened new doors to the entertainment mainstream in the United States, as well as its country-themed counterpart, Stagecoach. In 2020, Peck signed with Columbia Records. His first EP for the label, Show Pony, included the track “Legends Never Die”, a duet with country pop superstar Shania Twain. The same year, he recorded a steel guitar-influenced cover of Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy” as part of a series of Pride Month digital singles, as well as a pair of Righteous Brothers covers with vocalist Paul Cauthen under the banner flag of the Unrighteous Brothers.
He recently released his second album, The Bronco, which combined his expansive voice with a full-bodied production and arrangements that added touches of rockabilly, ’60s pop, psychedelia and bluegrass to his mix. Additionally, the song “All I Can Say” featured a vocal duet with Bria Salmena, a member of the Canadian indie rock band Frigs who does odd jobs in Peck’s road band. In addition, he also appeared on the song “Jackson”, a cover duet by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. It was also revealed that he is the sixth artist on Lady Gaga’s Born This Way The Tenth Anniversary, with Peck reimagining the song “Born This Way” in a country style.
