Paul James biography
Paul James is an American television gardener from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Famously known as “The Gardener Guy”, Paul was the host of the HGTV show Gardening by the Yard from 1996 to 2009. He was the creator, writer and senior producer and also filmed nearly the entire show in his own backyard.
James produces content for the Southwood Garden Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he also educates the public about gardening and garden care. He also hosts regular seminars in Southwood and had a weekly segment with Taft Price on KJRH Channel 2.
Paul admits there was a time when he hated gardening with a passion. His dislike came from digging Bermuda grass from his father’s vegetable garden in mid-August. However, he has come a long way since that horrible day.
“I remember watching gardening shows when I was younger and was blown away by how perfect everything was. The ground was so soft and brittle. The plants were free from pests and diseases. And the hosts never broke a sweat! So when I got the chance to do my own show, I decided to make it as real as possible.”
The realism in her shows and her gardening zeal and style have drawn many viewers to her show since her first appearance on HGTV in 1996.
“If I have a place where the soil is horrible or a plant that has been riddled with insects or plagued by some sort of disease, I don’t hide it. I feature it. How else will people know how to deal with their own garden problems?”
His gardening career began in 1978 when he and his wife Carrie bought their first home. He is a proud graduate and majoring in botany, plant physiology and plant pathology. Paul earned his master gardener certification in 1983. Despite his academic qualifications, Paul derives most of his knowledge from “digging in the dirt and making more than a few mistakes along the way.”
Paul spends his free time in the kitchen, fishing his favorite trout stream, playing the guitar, hanging out with his kids, practicing Tae Kwon Do and working on his third degree black belt.
