Biography of Phylicia Rashad
Phylicia Rashad is an American actress who became famous after her work on the television series The Cosby Show. Furthermore, she is well known for being the first African-American woman to win a Tony Award for Best Actress in 2004. This was named after her for her performance in the play A Raisin in the Sun.
Rashad graduated from Howard University, Washington DC, in 1970 with a BFA in theater. Soon after, she got a job at the Negro Ensemble Company in New York.
She made her first Broadway appearance in 1972 and had minor roles in the hit musicals The Wiz (1975) and Dreamgirls before her transition to television.
In 1982, Phylicia landed a regular role on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live. Two years later, comedian Bill Cosby cast her in the role of his wife, attorney Clair Huxtable, in The Cosby Show (1984-1992).
