Rob Powers is a popular American sports journalist and broadcaster who currently works as an anchor and reporter for an ABC affiliate called WEWS News based in Cleveland, Ohio. He has worked as a correspondent for the station for nearly a decade. Previously, Powers spent time fulfilling his duties as a sportscaster for another ABC affiliate and flagship station known as WABC News based in New Jersey, New York City. He also gained fame for working as a nightly anchor for WTVG News, another ABC News affiliate based in Toledo, Ohio.
Powers was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio to a Caucasian Native American family. He grew up as a very smart boy, always focused on his passion of becoming a journalist. John then attended and graduated from Holy Name High School in his hometown of Ohio. Eventually, Rob pursued his higher education at Eastern Michigan University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Communication.
Rob started his career as a journalist officially after his college graduation. His first job was as a freelance journalist, doing various television work in Binghamton, Indianapolis and other stations based in New York City. From there, he became the sports news director for WTVG News’ 5:30 pm newscast. Eventually, Powers was promoted to news anchor due to his hard work and dedication. He also did play-by-play voiceovers for football and basketball games put on by the University of Toledo while he was still working at WTVG.
He even appeared as the play-by-play announcer for the popular minor league baseball team Toledo Mud Hens. Rob left WTVG in Toledo and moved to New York to work as a correspondent for WABC News. In 2016, Rob announced his official departure from WABC News on his Facebook account. He was very happy and very excited to finally come home and work for WEWS news. Rob still works at WEWS and loves his new family in Clevland. Additionally, Powers has received nearly four regional Emmy Awards for the incredible stories he covered while working in Toledo.
