Roland Martin born Roland Sebastian Martin is an experienced American journalist, columnist and commentator. He is a Chicago-based CNN contributor as well as a key member of CNN’s Best Political Team on Television.
Since joining CNN in 2007, Martin has hosted a variety of television shows, including What Would Jesus Really Do?” Series. Most recently, he presented a three-part series on the issues presidential candidates avoid addressing as election day approaches.

After graduating from Texas A&M in 1991, Roland began working at the Austin American-Statesman. However, he later left the station and became a city reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
In 1995, Roland became a morning reporter on KRLD radio as a sports reporter. During his tenure at KRLD, he won the National Association of Black Journalists’ top sports reporting award. In addition, he received honors from the Houston Press Club.
Martin became news editor and morning anchor on KKDA radio’s 730 AM show. He was also editor of the Dallas Weekly. Starting in 2000, Roland worked as a freelance producer covering the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.
A year later, in 2001, Martin became the first editor of Blackamericanweb.com, an establishment founded by Tom Joyner and his wife Rev. Jacquie Hood Martin. He later returned to radio working as a news correspondent for the American Urban Radio Network. In addition, he worked as a sports commentator on the Washington, DC-based radio station WOL’s fifth quarter show.
Roland also launched the ROMAR Media Group in Dallas, later becoming the first news editor for the new Savoy magazine. In the year 2007, Martin made his first appearance on CNN and on Fox Television’s O’Reilly Factor.

This was after he was hired as a consultant by the Chicago Defender in 2004. Martin went on to work as the executive editor/general manager of the Chicago Defender, the most historic black newspaper in the country. At the same time, he worked as a radio talk show host for WVON-AM in Chicago.

He was named three times in a row in 2008, 2009, and 2010 by Ebony as one of the 150 Most Influential African Americans in the United States. Martin is also the 2009 winner of the NAACP Image Award for Best Interview for “In Conversation: The Michelle Obama Interview”. Furthermore, he was named one of the top 50 political experts by the Daily Telegraph in the UK.
