Shini Somara is a British mechanical engineer, media presenter, producer, and author best known for hosting TechKnow on Al Jazeera America. She is also well known for reporting for several BBC programs, including The Health Show. Somara has also hosted two educational series of physics and engineering videos on the Crash Course YouTube channel for PBS Digital Studios. Additionally, she has been a presenter on BBC America, Sky Atlantic, BBC1, BBC2, and PBS.
Born and raised in London, she attended Henrietta Barnett School. She later began her career in mechanical engineering at Brunel University London, completing a Bachelor of Engineering. After that, Somara switched to a PhD in engineering, which she received in 2003 for her doctoral thesis, Dynamic Thermal Modelling Using CFD.
On the other hand, her broadcasting career began in 2011 when she presented on BBC’s The Health Show, covering developments in global health. Months later that same year, she began hosting No Kitchen Required, which aired in 2012 on BBC America. In 2013, she began working on Al Jazeera America’s TechKnow talk show. Between 2014 and late 2016, she worked on several BBC productions, including Tomorrow’s Food, Battle of Jutland and Secrets of Orkney with Neil Oliver. She has most recently been a reporter on the science programme Razor on CGTN. As of January 2021, she is a regular commentator on the Science Channel’s Engineering Catastrophes.
