Shiv Nadar is a prominent Indian industrialist and businessman, best known for founding HCL Technologies Limited, a global IT services company. He later transformed the IT hardware company into an IT company.
Nadar began his career with Walchand Group’s Cooper Engineering in Pune in 1967. However, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to venture out on his own. In the mid-1970s, together with a group of partners, he founded a company that would later become HCL in a small rooftop room in Delhi, initially focusing on manufacturing calculators and microprocessors.
Later in 1976, Nadar founded Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL) with the vision of creating a global technology company. Initially, HCL focused on the hardware sector, producing the country’s first indigenous computers and pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the technology space in India.
In the 1980s, HCL began expanding beyond the Indian market, venturing into Singapore and eventually establishing a presence in other countries. The 1990s saw significant change with the formation of HCL Technologies, focusing on IT services and software, which would grow to become one of the largest IT services companies in the world. However, in late July 2020, he handed over the role to his daughter Roshni Nadar. She became the first woman president of a listed Indian IT company.
