A graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, who has appeared in shows such as Weekend (2011) and Knightfall (2017), he is one to watch out for in the years ahead, so join us to take a look at his career and personal life.
Tom Cullen Bio
Tom Cullen was born on July 17, 1985, in Aberystwyth, Wales, to an Irish mother and English father. Despite his parents’ background, Cullen was fully assimilated into Welsh culture as he grew up, in part because he was raised by his father, while his two siblings were raised by his mother after his parents, who were both playwrights, divorced.
He spent his formative years in Llandrindod Wells, a place he refers to as the Welsh Highlands, before moving to the capital Cardiff at the age of about 12, attending Llanishen High School, and then spending a year at the Central School of Speech and Drama. During this time Cullen was intensely involved with music but later decided to concentrate on acting, as he enrolled at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. From the very beginning, the young man showed a natural talent for his craft when he made his professional acting debut while still at school in the BAFTA Cymru Award-winning best film, Daddy’s Girl. He also starred in the BAFTA Cymru Award-winning short film “Watch Me”, in which he also played numerous stage roles, before graduating in Acting in 2009 with a First Class Honours Degree in Acting.
After graduating from high school, Tom Cullen, who had already built a solid reputation, did not have to wait long to find work, as he had the opportunity to choose which role he wanted to play. He had also followed in his parents’ footsteps in writing, as he had already written and produced a short film during his school days. This prompted him to found the Welsh company Undeb Theatre in 2009 together with his Welsh actor colleague Alexander Vlahos.

As a director, writer, or producer of plays for Undeb, Cullen appeared in short films such as 20 Questions (2009) and Balance (2010) before making his mainstream breakthrough with the romantic drama Weekend (2011), which won him a number of awards. Other shows and films in which Cullen appeared during this period include Black Mirror (2011), World Without End (2012), Downton Abbey (2013-2014), The Last Days on Mars (2013), and Desert Dancer (2014).
More recently, Tom Cullen has appeared alongside some of Hollywood’s top Hollywood actors such as Idris Elba, Gemma Arterton, and Armie Hammer in films such as A Hundred Streets (2016), Mine (2016), and The Other Half (2016) before making his debut as a screenwriter and director in Pink Wall, due for release in 2019.
Is He Gay?
It seems that an actor in Hollywood or elsewhere who dares to take on a gay role will have his sexuality questioned forever, despite the obvious facts proving the opposite, as Tom Cullen found out the hard way. In the British love drama movie Weekend (2011) Cullen played the role of a charismatic gay romantic named Russell. His performance in the film earned him the British Independent Film Award for Best Newcomer but continued to lead to speculation about whether he might be gay.
There is no evidence that Cullen is gay, as there are concrete indications that he is not. Since 2011, the Welsh actor has been in a relationship with Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany, best known for her primetime Emmy Award-winning role in the sci-fi television series Orphan Black (2013-2017). The two are said to have met during the shooting of the mini-series World Without End in Budapest. Since then they have been together and allegedly share a house in Los Angeles, California.
