Tom Ford biography
Tom Ford is an American fashion designer and film director who launched his own luxury brand in 2005, having served as creative director for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. Per his film deals, he wrote and directed the film A Single Man in 2009, and Nocturnal Animals in 2016. As of 2022, he is the Chairman of the Board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
Ford developed the burning desire to want to organize and rearrange things at a very young age. At age six, he rearranged the furniture in the house and gave his mother feedback on his hair and shoes. When he was 11, his family moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he attended St Michael’s High School. He later moved to Santa Fe Preparatory School, graduating in 1979.
At age 16, he enrolled at Bard College in Simon’s Rock. However, he was unable to finish his studies here because he dropped out. After dropping out, he moved to New York to study art history at New York University.

At New York University, he met Ian Falconer, who would end up being a springboard for his film and television career. He simultaneously began studying interior architecture at The New School’s faculty of art and design. After his studies, Ford was ready to start his career.
Despite his lack of fashion experience, he called American fashion designer Cathy Hardwick every day for a month in hopes of getting a job at her sportswear company. Cathy eventually agreed to interview him and he even got the job. He worked here for two years before moving to Perry Ellis.
He also worked here for two years, but got tired of working in American fashion. In 1994, he was promoted to Creative Director of Gucci. Turning this into her major career advancement as a fashion designer. He turned everything around at Gucci, turning it into one of the best-selling designer brands. When he was leaving the Gucci Group in 2004, Gucci was valued at $10 billion. To replace him, four people were hired to manage the tasks he performed.
