Ty Burrell is an American actor and comedian known for playing the role of Phil Dunphy on ABC’s Modern Family. His role earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Ty even received four consecutive Screen Guild Awards for Best Male Actor in 2013 for his role in Modern Family. He also gained more recognition and fame after starring in off-Broadway shows like Macveth and Burn This. Burrell’s other famous roles are in Out of Practice, Down in the Valley, Rough Night and Back To You.
Burrell was born and raised in Grants Pass Oregon as the son of a teacher. He also grew up as the eldest child in a two-child family. Therefore, Ty has a younger brother. He then attended and graduated from Hidden Valley High School in Gran Pass. Burrell then enrolled at the University of Oregon and worked as a bartender at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to pay his bills.
Burrell then transferred to Southern Oregon University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Performing Arts in 1993. Ty then furthered his education at Penn State University where he graduated with his MFA in Performing Arts. He joined the Theater 100 company alongside Keegan Michael Key after graduating from Penn State University.
Ty made his acting debut starring in a 2001 film called Evolution and another thriller called Black Hawk Down. In 2004, he landed the lead role in the remake of Dawn of the Dead. This was also the time when he played his famous Broadway roles in Macbeth, Burn This and another off-broadway film called The Blue Demon.
Burrell then landed his first major role as a New Jersey prosecutor in the Law & Order Special Victims Unit. He then appeared on Out of Practice until 2009. Ty landed his viral breakout role as Phil Dunphy alongside Sarah Hyland, Nolan GouldIt is Sophia Vergara on ABC’s Modern Family. Ty’s most recent roles are in Rough Night (2017), A Modern Farewell (2020) and Duncanville (2022).
