Joe Furey Biography
Joe Furey is an American meteorologist who currently serves as the co-head meteorologist for WTNH News 8. He can be seen on the air during the 5pm-6pm news and 11pm news, having joined the station in October 2017. Additionally, Furey hosts the 8pm-10pm news on WC TX.
Growing up in Norwalk, Connecticut, Joe participated Central Catholic Center School and worked most of his high school and early college years at Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk. He is also a proud graduate of Villanova University and Western Connecticut State University where did you study for degree in Meteorology.
He later became a graduate assistant/professor and eventually assistant director of the Western Connecticut State University Weather Center in Danbury under the guidance of Dr. Honey Goldstein.

Furey moved to The New England Weather Service in Hartford, where he provided daily weather forecasts for clients including Northeast Utilities while serving as a director. His first broadcasting career was with NEWS12 Connecticut while doing numerous radio stations like KC101, WAVZ and WICC. Afterwards, he moved to Hartford.
Furey loves playing baseball and played competitive baseball until the 50’s. Plus, he’s a huge Yankee fan, while his wife loves the Red Sox! Despite all this, her number one hobby is the weather. One of his notable weather stories is when Dr. Mel tasked him with setting up his big new weather logging station on the roof above WCSU’s weather office.
A few weeks, Hurricane Gloria appeared. The weather team got all excited when the anemometer registered an 83 mph gust of wind and then the weather station passed through the window they were looking out of, hitting the ground. Joe had forgotten to secure a spot on the roof!
Another of Furey’s favorite stories is when he predicted 1 inch of snow and we got 1 foot. The next day, he had a bucket of snow fall on his head while doing a live broadcast of the weather forecast on TV.
Joe credits his passion and love for the weather to his grandparents. The latter came from Newfoundland, Canada, and slept with the window open during the winter. They had different stories about icebergs passing by their home in St. John’s Newfoundland. They even narrated how in winter times the snow was so deep and falling that the only way out of their house was through a second-story window.
