Kirstin Garriss Biography
Kirstin Garriss is an Emmy-winning American journalist who has been with the Cox Media Group since August 2021 as a correspondent in Washington, DC. It covers the White House, Congress and the federal government.
From November 2018 to July 2021, Kristin worked as an investigative reporter at FOX 13 WHBQ in Memphis, Tennessee. After the death of George Floyd, Garriss walked miles with protesters and chronicled the subsequent changes to police reform in Memphis.
She also won a 2021 Regional Murrow Award for her two-part series, Black in America: General Pain and Healing, which focused on the experiences of four generations of Memphis men on racial inequality in the United States.
Before moving to Memphis, Kirstin worked as a government reporter for Spectrum News in Charlotte, North Carolina, a statewide hyperlocal cable channel. She covered the 2016 Republican and Democratic National Conventions, as well as Charlotte’s campaign for the 2020 Republican National Convention, throughout her Charlotte tenure.
Garris also served as a senior night reporter and Maryland State House reporter for WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, MD. In Washington, she covered the Maryland General Assembly for NPR and NBC News.
Kirstin also received the 2021 Gracies Award, a national award bestowed by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation for women in the media business. She is also a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and the Investigative Reporters and Editors Association (IREA) (IRE). Kirstin grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in Journalism-Electronic Communication with a dual major in History and Spanish for the Professions.
