Aron Baynes is a professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics who, although he started playing in his late teens, continued his path as one of the best players in the NBA and received a scholarship to the AIS.
A native of Australia, Baynes, who currently plays Power Forward/Centre, made his breakthrough on the basketball court with the San Antonio Spurs in 2013 and was inducted into the team’s NBA championship team in 2014. In 2015 he also moved to the Detroit Pistons.

Baynes was born on December 9, 1986, in the city of Gisborne, New Zealand, and graduated from Mareeba State High School after his family moved to the city of Mareeba, Queensland, in 1989. But at the age of 15, he started playing basketball with the help of his older brother Callum, who introduced him to the game of basketball. Before that time he was known for playing in the rugby league in the far north of Queensland, but gradually, as he developed a keen interest in basketball, he decided to pursue a career in the sport, and shortly after graduating high school he joined the Australian Institute of Sport where he received a college scholarship to play for Washington State University in 2006.
Aron’s career as a professional basketball player began in 2009 when he signed a two-year contract with the Lithuanian professional basketball club Rytas from Vilnius. In July of the same year, he played for the Los Angeles Lakers summer league team before the 2009-10 season. His contract with Lietuvos Rytas was not renewed, so after signing a two-year contract with the club he switched to the EWE Baskets Oldenburg of the German Basketball Bundesliga. Between 2010 and 2011 he scored an average of 6.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Aron maintained a non-renewable contract with several other basketball teams, such as Ikaros Kallitheas from the Greek Basketball Bundesliga and Union Olimpija from the Slovenian Basketball League, before deciding to seek an NBA contract. His first NBA contract was with the American professional basketball team San Antonio Spurs. His next one was between the 2012-13 seasons when he played several times for the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League. His first NBA start, however, was in game 4 of the Spurs’ first playoff round against the Los Angeles professional basketball team, the Lakers. He was given the task of defending the famous basketball player Dwight David Howard. In 2014, he was already one of the few Australian basketball players to successfully win an NBA championship. In the same year, he scored in a game his team lost to the Dallas Mavericks when he replaced Tim Duncan to score 16 points, which was considered a career-high at the time.
Aron Baynes Boston Celtics Career
The baller joined the Boston Celtics on July 12, 2015, after signing a one-year contract with the professional team. The $4.3 million contracts ended his career at the Detroit Pistons, where he scored 21 points against the Brooklyn Nets and 20 points against Oklahoma City Thunder. He signed with the Celtics as a free agent on the same day that his co-player in Detroit, Marcus Morris, was traded to Avery Bradley.
Aron joined the Celtics when the club had a big need in the center following the retirement of its two key players, Kelly Olynyk and Tyler Zeller. The Celtics’ regular-season finale on April 11, 2018, was quite remarkable, with Aron scoring his best performance of his career in a 110-97 win over the Brooklyn Nets on 26 points and 14 rebounds. He is currently considered one of the great men of the Boston Celtics.

Baynes is married to his beautiful girlfriend, Rachel Adekponya. Rachel is also Australian and the younger sister of Matthew Adekponya, the professional basketball player who plays as a guard for Grand Rapids Drive. He was not drafted in the 2014 NBA Draft, which makes him an unrestricted agent. The couple currently has a son named Mason. They moved to Boston after Aron signed a contract with the Boston Celtics.
