Asa Butterfield is an English actor who has received nominations for three British Independent Film Awards, two Critics Choice Awards, two Saturn Awards and three Young Artist Awards. He is famous for starring as Hugo Cabret in Hugo (2011) and Otis in Sex Education (2019-present).
He began his career as a child actor and gained recognition as the lead in the historical drama The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas (2008). In the same year, he had a guest role playing Donny in Ashes to Ashes. He also played Mordred in the Merlin episode “The Beginning of the End”.
In 2010, he had a small role in The Wolfman, where he played young Ben Talbot. After filming Ender’s Game, he was cast in X+Y as Nathan Ellis. His performance received widespread critical acclaim and led to him being nominated for a BIFA Best Actor Award.
In 2015, he appeared in a film adaptation of Ten Thousand Saints, and in 2016 he portrayed Jacob Portman in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Butterfield also starred as Gardner Elliot in the film The Space Between Us. He later cast as Otis Milburn in Sex Education, a Netflix series released on January 11, 2019.
