Ben Brown is a British journalist who currently works as a news presenter for the BBC’s news channel, BBC News. He is a presenter for BBC News at One, BBC Weekend News and the News Channel.
Born in Kent, he attended and graduated from Sutton Valence School, an independent school near Maidstone. While at school, he was on the debate team and placed second in national debate championships. He later graduated from the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies with a diploma with distinction.
In addition, he won an Open Scholarship to Keble College, Oxford, where he studied philosophy, politics and economics. After his studies he joined Radio Clyde in Glasgow as a reporter and later became a reporter for Radio City in Liverpool. In 1986, he joined Independent Radio News, where he covered big stories from superpower summits to the Hungerford massacre.
Most notably, he joined BBC TV News two years later. He was a Foreign Correspondent until 1991, reporting on the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Gulf War. Brown was then appointed Moscow Correspondent in 1991. As Moscow Correspondent, he witnessed the final collapse of communism and the downfall of Mikhail Gorbachev.
In January 1995, he resumed the role of foreign correspondent, based in London. After resuming his role, Brown extensively covered the break-up of Yugoslavia. He reported from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Kosovo. His stories helped secure several awards for the BBC, including the BAFTA award.
In May 2017, he was interrupted by a passerby while conducting a live interview on Bradford Street. The passerby walked into the scene, looked at the camera and said “Absolutely fantastic”. After looking at the woman, he didn’t ask her to leave, but reached out to get her out of the picture. Unfortunately, his hand was on her chest. The BBC said no further action would be taken as it was “clearly an accident”.
