Biography of Bill Plaschke
Bill Plaschke is an American journalist who currently works as an author and sports columnist for the Los Angeles Times. He joined the Los Angeles Times in 1996. During his career as a sports writer, he has made regular appearances on ESPN. He appears as a panelist on Around the Horn. Additionally, he is a COVID-19 survivor.
As a child, he attended and graduated from St Albert the Great Elementary School in Louisville. He later participated Ballard High School. Bill spent his freshman year in Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He received a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1980. He was also sports editor of the school newspaper, the Alestle.
Prior to joining the Los Angeles Times, Bill worked as a reporter in Fort Lauderdale and Seattle. After joining the Times, Bill primarily covered the Los Angeles Dodgers and eventually became a columnist in 1996. He is currently a member of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and a regular panelist on ESPN’s sports talk show Around the Horn.
He was named National Sports Columnist of the Year by the Associated Press. Additionally, he has a cameo role in the film Ali as a sports reporter. This was before the first fight against Sonny Liston. He also had a recurring role on the HOB series Luck. While serving as a correspondent for the Los Angeles Times at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, he was the subject of controversy. This was for a column that accused American gymnast Gabby Douglas of being unpatriotic for not smiling and placing her hand over her heart during the playing of the US National Anthem.
Gabby later apologized at a press conference, though some felt the criticism was unfair. In the summer of 2020, Plaschke wrote about her experience with COVID-19.
