Brian Kenny biography

Brian Kenny is an American journalist who works for MLB Network as a studio presenter and Fox Sports and DAZN as a play-by-play boxing commentator. He’s the host of MLB Now, dubbed “the show for the thinking fan” because he’s the face of baseball savvy and analysis on television.

Kenny previously worked for ESPN and presented his own show, The Brian Kenny Show, on ESPN Radio. Additionally, Brian is the host of the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies in Cooperstown, New York. He is one of the most respected baseball historians and broadcasters in the country.

Kenny acquired his magna cum laude in 1985 from New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, New York. From 1981 to 1982, he participated University of St. John. Kenny began his broadcasting career as a reporter for “LI News Tonight,” New York Tech’s long-running daily news program while still in college. He started working as a reporter for WLIG, TV 55 Long Island, in May 1985. In September 1985, Kenny was named Director of Sports for the network, marking the beginning of his sports broadcasting career. Additionally, Brian has been hired as Director of Sports for WTZA-TV (later WRNN-TV) in Kingston, NY in August 1986.

Brian introduced “Live Sports Line”, a late-night chat show, and play-by-play call for the Marist Red Foxes men’s basketball team and the Hudson Valley Renegades minor league baseball team. He stayed at the station until 1997, receiving 11 New York State Broadcaster Awards and 6 Associated Press Awards for its local sports coverage.

Kenny joined ESPN in 1997 and hosted the 6pm SportsCenter as well as ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. He was known for his heated debates with some of the best boxers in the world at Friday Night Fights, particularly Floyd Mayweather. He also hosted ESPNEWS’ Baseball Tonight and The Hot List, as well as ESPN Classic’s “Classic Ringside” and The Top 5 Reasons You, Can’t Blame. Brian hosted a special series called ringside in 2005. Each episode is three to six hours long and features a different great boxer.

Furthermore, Brian appeared in the 2006 movie Rocky Balboa and the 2007 movie Resurrecting the Champion as himself, and also acted as the “announcer team” of the demolition of houses in an episode of extreme makeover: Home Edition which aired on November 2, 2008, alongside fellow ESPN member John Saunders. (In this episode, the Extreme Makeover team built a new home and gym for a family that ran a youth boxing gym in Geneva, New York.)

Kenny co-hosted Kellerman and Kenny with Max Kellerman on ESPN Radio in New York City before anchoring The Brian Kenny Show on ESPN Radio. On the August 31, 2011 episode of The Brian Kenny Show, Kenny announced that he was leaving ESPN to join MLB network as an anchor. Likewise, on September 2, 2011, he hosted the 6pm episode of SportsCenter with Jonathan Coachman, which was his final broadcast. On September 19, 2011, Kenny made his MLB Tonight debut.

Brian has been the MLB Now anchor on the MLB Network since 2013. He can also be seen on the MLB Network main show “MLB Tonight” as well as the “Top 10 Right Now!” and on-site coverage of the All-Star Game and World Series.

Brian was the Master of ceremonies for Baseball Hall of Fame induction since 2017. Kenny previously worked for Showtime Championship Boxing, Fox Sports, and Top Rank as a boxing presenter and announcer. On NBC Sports Radio, he hosted “The Brian Kenny Show”.

Brian starred “EA Sports” “Fight Night Champion” as himself. Kenny was named the 2004 Sports Illustrated Media Willy of the Year and received the 2005 Sam Taub Award for excellence in boxing broadcast after winning a National Sports Emmy for Baseball Tonight in 2003.
