Jenner’s interest in athletics stemmed from a suggestion he received from his college coach, who advised him to make the switch after he suffered a knee injury that impaired his performance as a footballer. His first competition was in 1970 when he participated in a decathlon during a relay race in Iowa, where he finished fifth. The Olympic athlete continued to break records in most of his races, and in 1974 he took first place in the men’s decathlon and was on the cover of Track & Field News magazine. In 1975, he won a gold medal at the Pan American Games and broke a record set by athlete Avilov at the Eugene Triangle Games, in which participants from the USA, the USSR, and Poland took part. His Olympic career ended after the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, where he set a new record for the decathlon, but after the Games and his victories he officially declared that he would not return to the track, so he gave his best in all the events he participated in.
