
Claus Meyer biography
Claus Meyer is a Danish cook entrepreneur, food activist, cookbook author, teacher and TV presenter. He is the founder of the New Nordic Cuisine philosophy. Meyer has also been a popular food culture mediator in Denmark and internationally for many years. Prior to that, he was an associate professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Copenhagen.
Meyer was born and raised in Nyobing Falster, Denmark. He attended the Karlsruhe School of Art in 1980 and later was a professor at the Düsseldorf Academy, where he quickly gained popularity. He also earned a Masters in International Business Studies from the Copenhagen Business School. Claus is a restaurateur and culinary entrepreneur. As a chef, he has been associated with many projects, including infinity, and has also become a popular food culture mediator in Denmark and internationally for many years.
He worked with chef René Redzepi and co-founded a restaurant called Noma. The purpose of opening the restaurant was to implement the theoretical ideas of the New Nordic Cuisine Movement, as well as to promote the place. In addition, the restaurant has received three Michelin stars and was named the best restaurant in the world in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2021. In addition, Claus has also hosted several TV cooking shows such as Meyers Køkken and New Scandinavian Cuisine, as well as as broadcast in over 130 countries.
In 2010, he established the Melting Pot Foundation, which manages numerous projects around the world. The organization helped people in Denmark by encouraging inmates to live a crime-free life, as well as helping them with their diet. In 2013, Melting Pot opened a cooking school in La Paz, Bolivia, offering culinary education to poor Bolivians. They also founded a restaurant titled Gourmet, which was voted the 17th best in Latin America on the list of the 50 Best Restaurants in Latin America.
The organization is currently working on a social project in Brownsville and East New York. It is also establishing a cooking school, cafeteria, bakery and community centre, serving the local community with the aim of engaging at-risk youth. In addition, Meyer also opened the Great Northern Food Hall and the Agern restaurant, both in Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall and in New York City. However, the Agern restaurant closed permanently in 2021 after a long period of closure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, Meyer has also written and published several cookbooks. He is an associate professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Copenhagen. Additionally, Claus was named a “Social Impact Fellow” at the Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley.
