Biography of Daniel Gillies
Daniel John Gillies is New Zealander and Canadian actor, film producer, director and screenwriter. He is popular for starring as Elijah Mikaelson on The CW television series The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off The Originals. As a writer and director, he is known for starring alongside his wife in his own film, Broken Kingdom.
Daniel was born in Winnipeg, Canada, but raised in Invercargill and then Hamilton, where he attended Hamilton Boys High School. He later enrolled at Unitec, Auckland in ‘Performing and Screen Arts’. While there, Daniel appeared in several stage performances such as The Godboy in which he won the Chapman-Tripp Theater Award for Best Actor for his role as ‘Jimmy Sullivan’.
In addition to acting, he is also a writer and director who directed his own play called ‘Maybe’ at the ‘Unitec Performance and Screen Arts Theatre’. Furthermore, he was also featured in a leading role in the TV series Street Legal, portraying the character role of Tim O’Connor. While still in his native land, he realized that his career opportunities in New Zealand were limited and therefore decided to move to Sydney, Australia for a short period. After that, he moved to Canada for two months and worked as a waiter and dishwasher until he moved to Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles, Gillies landed the role of John Jameson in the films Spider-Man 2 and Bride and Prejudice. Furthermore, he has also appeared in TV shows like NCIS, Masters of Horror, and True Blood. Daniel became widely recognized in 2010 when he was cast in a recurring role on The CW drama ‘The Vampire Diaries’ as Original Vampire as Elijah Mikaelson.
He later reprized his role as Elijah in the spin-off supernatural drama, The Originals. Additionally, Gillies starred in the lead role in the Canadian supernatural medical series ‘Saving Hope’ as Dr. Joel Goran. The series became a popular hit after it was released, which led to it being expanded from 13 to 18 episodes.
Furthermore, Gillies also directed and starred with his wife Rachael Leigh Cook in the movie Broken Kingdom. He is currently writing two scripts that we hope to see on film in the future, and he is determined that one day Tom Selleck will play his father.
