Delnaaz Irani is an Australian journalist who works as an anchor for Deeper Look New York at US-based NHK World-Japan. Irani is also the host of ABC’s Australian lifestyle show Escape From The City. She serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for World Vision Australia. Previously, she worked as a business and finance anchor on the ABC News morning show, News Breakfast, in Australia.
Irani was born in Mumbai, India and grew up on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, where she completed primary and secondary school. She graduated with a double degree from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) which is a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Psychology. Del also continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley on an overseas scholarship.
Del began her career in journalism as a field producer, traveling and living in many different countries including Bermuda, Panama, Belgium and Dubai. She has also worked for network channels like Fox News, CBS and Channel News Asia. In 2006, Irani was hired as a business journalism intern for Thomson Reuters at the 24-hour English news channel in India, Times Now. Two years later, she served as host of the international nightly news program, Reuters World Report. While there, Del covered Barack Obama’s victory in the 2008 presidential election, the impeachment of Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan, and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
Furthermore, she was appointed Mumbai correspondent for BBC World News and became the presenter of India Business Report. During her time at the BBC, she was known as Delnaaz Irani and provided live coverage of breaking stories including the trial of the only surviving gunman in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Earlier, Irani joined ABC as a presenter and reporter in May 2012 and returned to Australia around the same time.
At ABC, she worked alongside Michael Rowland and Virginia Trioli as an anchored breakfast team. Del also served as a business and finance presenter for the network. From 2013 to 2016, she co-created and hosted the award-winning talk show “#TalkAboutIt”. She was also a fact-checking anchor for RMIT ABC News in 2017 and 2018. Irani has interviewed prominent Bollywood celebrities on the show including Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan. Additionally, she and her co-producers won the Australian National Press Club Higher Education Media Award for a #TalkAboutIt episode about international students in 2015.
Furthermore, Del is one of the five hosts of the reality lifestyle show, Escape From The City along with Jane Hall, Simon Marnie and others. The series is produced by Fremantle and premiered on ABC primetime in January 2019. In addition, she worked as a host for a program titled “Deeper Look from New York”, a weekly program on NHK World-Japan. The program features in-depth interviews with experts in politics, business, global affairs and sociocultural issues.
Prior to that, she was a regular moderator for the United Nations (UN), hosting regional conferences for the International Labor Organization (ILO). Irani is also a former board member of the Western Bulldogs Football Club Community Foundation.
