Diane Keaton Reveals How She Helped Al Pacino Get Cast in ‘The Godfather

It’s past the challenge to imagine a world where Al Pacino didn’t play Michael Corleone in 1972’s The Godfather. Regardless, Diane Keaton says the creators almost went down a surrogate path — — until she was projected into the movie.

Keaton actually caught up with ET’s Nischelle Turner while looking at her new movie Mack and Rita, and she pondered her eminent calling piled high with revered and especially whimsical characters.

Returning to the earliest benchmark of her cinematic vocation, Keaton recalled how she was projected into The Godfather – – and how little she expected to land the job that has continued to be so crucial to the film and its legacy.

“I went to The Godfather without ever realizing it and I didn’t know anything about it, and I was just there, I was there like every other woman,” she reviewed. “I had no idea what in bursts I was in there. Likewise, they cast me into this job!”

While it had been anticipated, creators and director Francis Ford Coppola were looking for the right actor to play Michael Corleone, the reluctant replacement for the misbehaving, heart-thumping Corleone family throughout the film.

“No one demanded Al Pacino. They didn’t completely accept that he was supposed to have that effect, and I had been anticipated recently,” said Keaton. “I was designed before Al Pacino in Godfather 1! Isn’t that impossible to miss?”

“So I was staying there and they brought him in when I was staying there and we coordinated before [the producers], and they gave him the job,” she continued. “Do you believe that? After he gave an injection beforehand and they didn’t demand it.”

“What could The Godfather have been without Al Pacino?” she added. “It’s just one of those unconventional and amazing things throughout your normal day-to-day existence.”

As of now, after 40 years, Keaton is at this point a leading lady with his new movie, Mack and Rita. The film follows a 30-year-old, self-described writer named Mack (Elizabeth Lail) who reluctantly agrees to go to Palm Springs for a lonely party for her best friend Carla (Taylour Paige). Regardless, while appearing, Mack powerfully transforms into his 70-year-old future self, who goes by the name Aunt Rita (played by Keaton).

The artist focused on what drew her to the show, sharing, “There aren’t a lot of these female-directed movies, so we’re lucky to have [be prepared to do one].”

“Also, it’s perfect, and it’s perfect to do and be key to that. There aren’t many of them,” she added.

Mack and Rita is scheduled to hit theaters on August 12.
